Title: How To Think Correctly

Speaker: Pastor Wayne Cordeiro

Our topic today is about “How to Think Correctively.” How many of you think that thinking should come naturally? According to the Bible, there is a godly way of thinking. God spoke in the bible so many times about it. Pastor Wayne will be speaking to us through the different passages in the Bible. He will also give us pointers on how to think biblically. Pastor Wayne just got back from Oregon. He starts our message with sharing about what he has been doing in Oregon.

Thanks for allowing me to be a missionary of sorts. I just got back from Oregon in assisting to establish our Christian college. It will be called New Hope Christian College in the fall. The symbol of our Levites with the tongue of fire will be used.  We will have collegiate clothing that will be in contract for three years with Nike. They were nice enough to give us 45% off. Their main company is in Oregon.  In honor of one of  the churches in the New hope movement we are honoring them for their 30 years of being globally known as a church with our franchising. We are excited about us in having a Christian college in the mainland.

Today I am going to speak to you about “How To Think Correctly.” Have you ever taken a class on how to think? Probably not. Nobody taught you to think. You would say, ”Shouldn’t it come naturally?” That is your problem.  Well…no, there is away on how to think biblically. God speaks about it in the Bible so many times. If you don’t biblically think, you will think wordly. In Romans 12, it says it this way, “ do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by renewing your mind…”  In Matthew 6:22, it says that “the lamp of your body is your eye. If therefore your eye is clear your whole body will be filled of light.” Whatever you put in mind so is your life. Then it continues to say in verse 23 that “ but if your eye is bad your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” We perceive that everyway we think should be that way. No. Your mind is the forerunner for your life. It can’t be like a loose fire hose or it can’t be spaghetti noodles on caffeine. You have to control it. Or else Satan will take hold of it.  Satan is headhunter. Our mind is his battlefield. Imagination is his trophy.  Satan mutates our thinking. He does this by the lies he places in our minds. He is the father of all lies.  No one has taught us to think, but how often does Jesus have spoken about setting our minds on above.

Let us read in Proverbs…

"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7 KJV).

What's going on outside of you is a reflection of what's going on inside of you.

I can tell a lot about how a person think by looking at their life and their relationships; It is interesting that people that are fruitful and successful think differently. They think  effectively. In the Old Testament God spoke about the way people think. Remember Caleb and Joshua and the ten or so spies. Ten came back and said it can’t be done. But Joshua said “ Think differently. It can be done!” The Lord said that of all the tribes only Joshua and Caleb would go to the Promiseland because of the different Spirit within them. The other ten tribes were prevented in going to the Promiseland because of how they think. In Daniel, he had a different Spirit. He think excellently. He think differently. His spirit within him was right. What is going inside you what goes on the outside.  Jesus says also in Matthew and Luke about the Pharisees who was good on the outside but they had to wash their cup inside. That is why their lives were falling apart.  This means that they needed to wash out their inside (spirit, heart and mind). Image management was the concern of the Pharisees. Jesus said to them to  concentrate on the inside. On the other hand, David said in Psalm 129 says “ Search me Oh God and know my heart, checkout my anxious thoughts ( paraphrase).” He was concern of what was on the inside. He put himself on trial. Often, I pray that God will take hold of my thoughts, so I would not regressed to what I use to think.

Let us read the next verses…

"...we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Cor. 10:5).

Your thoughts are not the first thing for your actions, but you need to take hold of it. It is your tool.  It is not the first thing. You need to hold it captive. I always thought that it was the first, but it is not the first thing. When God first breathe into us life, the mind was not the first thing that captured us but the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God tells us what to think and what not to think. These are the reasons why we need to let our every thought be held captive to the obedience to Christ.  Did you know your thoughts alone could raise your heartbeat or lower it?  Have you been in a scary movie and you know it is not true and your heartbeat would just raise? Your thoughts would just be carried away and you will think of bad thoughts. Did you also know that your thoughts could make your fearful and not confident or on the other hand it could give you strength, courage and great confidence?  Another issue, did you know your thoughts could give you good rest at night or not at all? Also did you know that it could mess up your digestive system or you could eat well? You have control over it. Yes indeed, you need to let it be captured by the Hold Spirit of God.

Let us read the next verse in Colossians…

“Set your mind on the things above and not on the things beneath.”  Colossians 3:2

Our minds need to be set.  It doesn’t just go on its own. It is like a radio.  If we don’t do this, our minds will be scanning with what the world has to offer. Constantly it is scanning. We need to submit our minds to Christ and allow Him to change our way of thinking. Now in the short time we have I can’t cover everything. It is a fantastic subject. Just remember that successful people take hold of their minds. They think for a change or change to think. Some of them might have a fewer talents and gifts and others are plenty. They that have a fewer talents know how to use their minds and God uses them. Successful people don’t allow themselves to be bitter, angry, and be a victim of their minds. Wrong thoughts trigger wrong actions. They chose to be setting their minds on above.  The Spirit of God is telling them.

This reminds me of a person that I knew when I was a youth pastor. The persons name is Brother Swaggart. In those days, we call people sister or brother. Here we call them auntie and uncle. He was an old gentleman. He had a boat of a car.  He regulated the car by placing his foot constantly on the breaks. You could hear him coming down the road. He had one foot on the gas but constantly regulating his breaks. His son was a mechanic. He came to him one day. His son told his Dad that he burned the breaks, so he fixed it. The father came back to him and said that it doesn’t work anymore. Sometimes we have this self-limiting breaks.  This is how we should do it on our thoughts. Allow the Holy Spirit to regulate our minds and put a break on our thoughts. Why don’t we just let the Lord Jesus renew our minds.

God has engineered us for fruitfulness. Mentioned in Jeremiah 29:!1 that “ I know the plans I have for you, not calamity but fruitfulness. Not to harm you…(paraphrase)”  If you start thinking like the mind of Christ, it doesn’t limit you. In Ephesians 2:10, mentioned in the passage, “ we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which the Lord was promised beforehand that we should walk in His ways. (paraphrased).” In Corinthians “ …ran like you win.”  But if we stumbled…Then in Romans 28,  it says, “  it will all work for good according to His purpose for all that loves Him.” We need to allow the Lord to capture our minds. I will only give you two points that you have to think  So…here it goes…what are the breaks that will mess us up? Here they are…

TWO BEGINNING POINTS

1. Decide no longer to blame.

Blaming blinds you. Remember this phrase.  In Exodus 15:24-25 it said “So the people grumbled at Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” Then he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters become sweet.” When you blame somebody it blinds you of the answers that might be under your nose. The people blamed Moses. The answer must have been just under their noses. It was mentioned in the passage that God showed him. It must have been a branch that they stepped on all day.  Don’t blame. Put a stop to blaming. Take responsibility.  An example of what blaming just happened to me just this morning…I was in Edmonton yesterday. I just came in Friday night. I wanted to have a cup of coffee. I have this Irish creamer I like to put in my coffee. I couldn’t find it. It was not where it always was. I always think my son Aaron comes over and rummage through everything. He thinks everything he could take.  I looked everywhere. I started blaming my son. I was blinded Then the Lord told me…just look. Then I found it. I allowed blame to cloud out my mind. Another story that reminds me about blaming was about a guy speeding on his motorcycle he pulled in the hotel. He started getting mad at the person. He was blaming him or her. He was blinded by his speeding. Always…

It takes two.

The idea of blame takes two. The moment you take responsibility and let go that is the way of renewing your mind.

Let us read the need passage.

"'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?' Jesus answered, 'It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him'" (John 9:2-3).

You need to have new software load in your mind.  Use the word of God to do this. For example is what I did Jeremiah 29: 11, Ephesians 2:10, 1 Corinthians 2:5 ….personalize it to yourself.  We emphasis on devotions because this how we transform our minds by what the Lord says to us. We hear what the he wants for our lives.

    • It is never too late to have a ... happy childhood.

2. Three groups of people you must forgive:

    • Your parents.

Your parents didn’t have experience in raising you. We all came with no experience. We have to release them. If we don’t ever forgive them, we will always remain us a child. It will keep us from all our potentials. So, we need to forgive them. I think we could learn from the bad and good. An example of that was how I was raised by a military God and how he discipline us. I didn’t like that. I couldn’t blame him. HE didn’t know any better. Now I learned not to be that way in how I raised my kids. We have chose the right path. Remove the breaks.

    • People from close relationships.

This pertains to relationship that didn’t work out.  It made you bitter. Relationships currently you don’t have.  You probably see things that had warming signals and did it anyway.  Some suggestions maybe is to  write a letter  that you forgive them and mail it. We need to forgive them. It will release you and God could use you.

    • Everyone  else.

This could be everyone else. An example of that are people at your work,  your boss, your co-worker, your teacher and others in your past. You have to remember that Christ paid the price for all our sins and why can’t we forgive others. We have to remember to renew our minds so we could walk in God’s ways. He has so much for us.  In conclusion,  in the end…that will help us develop to all what God has want us to be. He paid the price.

Discussion Suggestions:

1. Who holds captive of your mind?

2.  How do you think correctly?

3.  Are you going through specific trials that you could share with the group that God is

is walking you through concerning your mind?

4.  Give an example of how the various passages from the Bible affect our way  of

thinking.
