Lord Protect Me and Give Me Peace

Richard Waialeale

Scripture
Psalms 91:1-2 (NIV)
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

Psalms 91:5-6 (NIV)
5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.

Observation
Many of the Psalms were written by David during a time when he was being pursued, and hiding out in the caves. I cannot imagine what David must have felt having people come against him, but what is known is these writings of the Psalms would bring peace, comfort and wholeness into his life. Many Psalms like “91” would find security in trusting in the Most High God, he encouraged himself that he would be delivered from the various frightening attacks of the wicked. He knew that the Lord had appointed His angels over him to protect him.
This beautiful psalm of deliverance has been a comfort to thousands through the ages. There is an old story of a British army officer who required his troops to memorize and jointly recite this psalm throughout their deployment in World War I. It was reported that they were the only unit in their regiment that suffered no casualties during that engagement. The promised protection in this psalm is also another reason why some Christian missionaries to China experienced no fear or illness during a recent SARS epidemic in that region. There is wonderful safekeeping power in the promises of God.

Application
If ever feeling like the whole world is crashing in on you, or perhaps the pressure of this world is stressing you out, or simply not feeling quite as well as you would like to be. Turn to the book of Psalms and begin reading it and feel the Holy Spirit bring comfort and rest to your soul. Spiritual healing comes from only one person, Jesus. That is why they call Him the healer, the comforter, the great physician.

Prayer
Lord I pray, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” In Jesus I trust. Amen.
