Possibilities & Potential of HopeJohn Tilton
Romans 5:1-5 Therefore, since we have been justifiedthrough faith, wehave peacewith God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2through whom we have gained accessby faith into this grace in which we now stand. And weboast in the hopeof the glory of God.3Not only so, but wealso glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;4perseverance, character; and character, hope.5And hopedoes not put us to shame, because God’s lovehas been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Paul gives us the path and process of the possibilities and potential that we can hold on to through Christ in faith and hope, given the challenges of life that will come; not if, but when, how frequent and what magnitude. It is our faith in the possibilities and potential through Christ that can give us a quelling of fear and subsequently a peace even when we go through sufferings. That belief is supported by the focus on what Christ is intentionally doing in us to grow us in character, thereby realizing that the pain and sufferings will result in a better tomorrow and a better self. It is like the athlete pushing through heartbreak hill or getting in that additional rep in a workout, knowing that the pain and burn one feels will result in a gain. That focus in achieving our goals helps us endure he momentary pain. We then can foresee and believe that we will receive the prize we seek.
I tend to be a worry wort by nature, apprehensive of failure or bad things happening. These scriptures give me exactly what is stated, the hope of God's good and intention for me if I am faithful in believing and persevering through life's challenges focusing on possibilities and potential and thereby enduring any pain via the drive of hope in my heart. I know that a peace then comes over me that allows me not to fret but to see what Christ is doing in me. It is then that I have a resolve of strength that comes from within. It's truly a perception and state of mind that can focus on the possibilities and potential, rather then the fear of failure and doom. Interestingly, even if there is failure, I can then hold on to what God is trying to teach me, grow me for His purpose and will.
Dear Lord, please seed into me the continuing element of faith and hope through you to see life and all of its challenges in terms of what can be through possibilities and potential, that I will carry a peace and confidence of what you are doing in me. I know then that I will exude a coutenance of peace and joy that will influence others.
