Peer & People Pressure

John Tilton

Scripture
John 18:38-39 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
Observation
Pilate obviously found no basis for any charges against Jesus based on Jesus statements of who is was and what his call was to be. However, it seems that Pilate gave in to the pressure of pleasing the people and thereby finding a manner to allow Jesus to be punished (the choice of freeing a criminal or Jesus), knowing the people's feelings about Jesus and their intent. Thus, in fact, Pilate allowed the pressure of the people prompt him not to do what was right, but in fact would allow a criminal to go free instead of Jesus.
Application
Are there times in our lives where we allow peer or people pressure to prompt us to make unwise or incorrect choices in our lives because we want to please people, be liked or are afraid to go against the powers to be or the masses? Are there times we compromise what would be the Lord's will in order to be accepted by the world's way? I know that I at times in the interest of wanting to please people and peers that I may consider or even act out in compromising what I know in my heart is right, yet feeling that the result would not be grossly wrong, but perhaps just a little gray. However, just a little gray is still not right if I know what is right and wrong, and more so what God's will is. Peer and people pressure can be so influencing to better judgment. I know that I need to be steadfast in God's word and what His will is, clearly as the Bible states the facts.
Prayer
Dear Lord, guide me that I would not compromise your Word or will in my life by being influenced or pressured by people and peers. Give me the steadfastnest to do what is right and not give in to the pressures of people and peers, even if it means going against popular opinion or the masses.
