Scripture
7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. John 8
Observation
An angry mob of men brought a woman caught in adultery to Jesus. These men want and wait for Him to proclaim her guilt, so they can carry out her death penalty. Jesus doesn’t even give them His full attention as he writes in the dust with His finger. Finally, with everyone anxiously watching, he stopped writing and proclaimed His sentence, “…let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone.” Such a wise and powerful pronouncement. He didn’t ignore her sin, He set it in relation to everyone else’s. He didn’t excuse her sin, but He forgave it. This morning I’m reminded of Jesus’ wisdom and strength. I am in awe of the way he handled the angry crowd through speaking the truth. He sets the example in His instruction to the woman by not overlooking her sin, but instead forgiving her.
Application
I want to become more and more like Jesus: a light in the darkness and an example in turmoil.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Please grant me wisdom and discernment, strength and courage. Forgive me of my many sins and weaknesses. May I be an example of You here on earth. In Jesus name, Amen
