Beauty in the Details

Elwin Ahu

Scripture
"The man said to me, "Son of man, see with your eyes, hear with your ears, and give attention to all that I am going to show you, for you have been brought here in order to show it to you. Declare to the house of Israel all that you see." (Ezek. 40:4)
Observation
It was a new temple that was to be built and in his vision God revealed the details to Ezekiel. It was a man with the measuring rod who began to lay out the dimensions of the temple, not with generalities, but with precision. From the gates to the inner rooms and its ornaments, Ezekiel was exposed to all that was to be. Why was his vision so precise? What was God's purpose in setting out the details? Because God is not a god of generalities; He is a God of precision and the beauty of His creation is discovered in the details.

He did so at the time of creation in the garden with animals that were given specific names. He provided Noah with the dimensions for the ark and Moses the measurements for the tabernacle and Solomon's temple. He knows every hair on our head and calls each of us by name, while numbering each star in the heavens. He is a God of details and therein lies the beauty of God, for within the details exist His deep and abiding love and concern for His creation. He cares enough to take the time to specify the details and leaves nothing to chance. The temple was yet to be constructed, but God already knew what it was to be and had Ezekiel witness the detailed description of His plans.

I wonder, however, how many of us take the time to detail the plans for our own lives, or, take the time to inquire of the Lord the plans that He has for us. Prov. 9 says, "Wisdom has built her house,... hewn out her seven pillars... prepared her food... mixed her wine; she has also set her table." In other words, it is wise to plan and pay attention to the details of our lives. God's deep and abiding love for us is found in the plans He has already laid out for us,, but we tend to live aimless lives, don't we; without purpose, without a vision, without cause. We negligently waste our days, rather than intentionally pursue what He may have detailed for us, for our family, for our devotional time with Him, for our relationships.
Application
God is a purposeful God, and so must I develop myself to be more disciplined and intentional in the things that I do. I've heard it said before, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. If I don't spend time thinking through and pursuing the details, I may just forfeit the best laid plans God has reserved for my life. Whether it be in forgiving the unforgivable, loving the unlovable, or simply serving one another, I cannot leave these to chance, but must pursue it with a purpose. My daily time should also be detailed in order that I may make the most of my time, "for the days are evil" and full of distractions that will pull me away from God's best. The beauty of His love is found in the details of my life. I must pay attention to the details, lest I miss discovery God's best for me.
Prayer
Father, thank you for loving so much so that you leave nothing in my life to chance. Help me to be discerning and wise to see and recognize the details that you've outlined in the plans for my life, and help me to intentionally pursue them.
