Not Going Back

John Tilton

Scripture
2 Peter 2:20-22 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
Observation
As Peter speaks about false teachers and the ramifications or destruction that can follow if we are dooped to follow with them in there ways and teaching. The scripture is a stern warning to be careful that we are able to filter what is of God and what is not. We who are saved and washed by the blood of Jesus Christ need to heed the warning not to return to our old ways of sin, often without really recognizing what is happening in our lives due to deception by the enemy, or justifying our dabbling in our old ways. It's like the fish with a hook in its mouth thinking that it is free.
Application
I am so blessed by God's hand on my life; especially through the season of falling in sin, of which I gladly distance myself from day by day. Yet, I recognize and know that the enemy is cagey and deceptive in the subtle ways that temptation can and does creep into my life. I need to be diligent and strong in "bounding and renouncing" away from the temptations of the enemy. I know that a key is not letting sinful thoughts take place in my mind, which often can lead to letting down my defense. I do not want to be like a dog going back to its vomit or a sow returning to the muck.
Prayer
Dear Lord, please guide and strenghten me to be diligent and intentional in reading your Word to give me what I need to be strong in my walk with you, to recognize the enemies assaults on my life with you. I pray that you will guide me to victory each and every day, to walk forward with you, rather then back to the vomit and muck of my old ways.
