Words of Discontent

"But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth ... For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing." (James. 3:14-16)

"The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity ... hatred ... jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition ... and envy ... I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Gal. 5:19-21 NIV)

  1. Unmet EXPECTATIONS.
"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want ... When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures." James. 4:1-3 NIV)

"Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and ... how to live in prosperity ... I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." (Phil. 4:11-13)

  2. Unrealistic CRAVINGS.
"Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, 'I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.'" (Heb. 13:5)

"But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content." (1 Tim. 6:6-8)

  3. Unresolved INSECURITIES.
"A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones." (Prov. 14:30 NIV)

"For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well." (Ps. 139:13-14 NIV)
