Trust with All Your Heart
Dan & Judy Goo share a life story
In 1989, life was great for newlyweds Dan & Judy Goo. Soon they welcomed their firstborn child, Elisha. Not long after, however, Dan went to the doctor.
The Valley of the Shadow
His complaints seemed minor but persisted—a poor appetite & dry cough. The diagnosis loomed dangerous: “There’s a shadow in your chest,” warned the doctor. “We need more X-rays.” It seemed impossible. Dan had been with the Honolulu Police Department for nine years & was in great shape—always jogging & lifting weights. “I stayed in shape so I could keep ahead of the bad guys!” Dan recalled with a smile.
Within days, he was diagnosed with a rapid growing lymphoma cancer. It was a huge mass in his chest equal to the size of an open palm. And the tips of that palm reached into all his major organs: his esophagus, lungs & heart. It was devastating.
Immediately he began powerful doses of radiation & chemotherapy.
“Why me?” Dan asked, trying to make sense out of it all.
Dan & Judy had always been faithful servants of the Lord. He taught a children’s Bible study. Together they hosted a Bible study in their home. This blindsided them both.
They prayed for eight long months.
A Late Night Call
During the last round of radiation & chemo, the tumor stopped responding. Dan went for a second biopsy. If the cancer was still there, his only hope would be a bone marrow transplant.
That evening, after the procedure, Dan rested at the hospital. “It made me feel really good when people would tell me, ‘I’m praying God will heal you!’” He understood that only the Lord could make a difference. “That night, I felt calmness that everything would be alright; my wife and child would be fine and I was satisfied with my life. I was ready.”
Though it was very late, the phone rang – it was Judy. Her voice urgent.
She had been preparing for their Bible study when she received a word, and called to tell him the news: “Dan, it says in 2 Corinthians 1-11, ‘Praise be to God the Father of compassion & all comfort… In our hearts we felt the sentence of death. He will deliver us... in answer to the prayers of many.’
“Dan, I believe the Lord is telling us that you will be healed!”
When the results came back, the biopsy revealed only scar tissue remained. It was a miracle! And to add an exclamation mark to the miracle, though riddled with chemicals and told he could father no more children, Dan and Judy found out a few months later that they had a baby on the way!
Looking back, Judy says “God knows you can go through the fire and He will never put you through more than you can handle.” That understanding comes only with trust.
