Happy Birthday Caleb! A toddler who died and was brought back to life

On September 20, 2007, Caleb Egdamin celebrated his fourth birthday. Though every birthday is special for a young child, Caleb’s fourth birthday is especially significant because Caleb never should have seen it. Caleb died earlier this year.

Caleb's Miracle

On March 6, 2007. Kehau Egdamin was at her Tuesday night Women in the Word meeting. Her husband Brandon was at home, taking care of their youngest son Micaiah in the bedroom, trying to put him to sleep. Then Brandon heard screaming. His brother in law was yelling for help. Brandon and Kehau’s three-year-old son Caleb was found at the bottom of the pool at his home. No one knew he had gone outside to play.

Brandon ran outside and saw his brother in law pulling Caleb out of the pool. When they pulled him out of the pool, he wasn’t breathing. Brandon attempted CPR, but there was no response. They rushed Caleb to the hospital. Doctors and nurses tried their best to revive him, but 40 minutes after he was pulled from the pool Caleb was pronounced dead.

In tears, Brandon spoke into Caleb’s ear and cried to God, “please, don’t let him go.” At that moment, the paramedic yelled out, “he’s got a pulse!”

God had spared Caleb’s life and performed a miracle right before everyone's eyes. It has been a tough test of faith for the family and quite a journey but as they see God's miracle in progress, their faith continues to grow stronger.

But Caleb’s battle isn’t over. He isn’t the same boy he was before the accident; he can’t talk, he can’t smile, but he can breathe on his own now, and turns toward sounds around him. The medical bills are huge, and the family is asking for any support that can be given. They have set up a trust fund at First Hawaiian Bank under the name Friends for Caleb.

Caleb has continued to show great strides in his lengthy recovery process. In a recent therapy session, Caleb responded to the therapist’s commands and was able to push a switch to make a toy move. He has also been much more alert as of late, and has even been able to track movement with his eyes. Micaiah kept putting his head on Caleb’s and Caleb responded by making faces at him. Caleb has certainly come a long way since March, but the road to full recovery is still long.
