PASTORS' DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Intellect is Over-RatedTim Savage
18 Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.” 20 And again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless.” 1 Corinthians 3
Intelligence is over-rated. I often place high value on those who are well educated and intelligent, but this morning I am reminded that worldly wisdom is often times of little use in the kingdom. Being smart in the secular world can be a hindrance to our Christian walk because we like to be able to understand, prove and explain things. But God likes to move in ways that are incomprehensible, unproven and unexplained; by doing this he renders the science and intelligence of this world useless – all we know to be significant and important is valueless. Intelligence without faith is meaningless; God can work miracles whether we are smart or wise, but he may chose not to work a miracle if we don’t have faith. Verse 19 is especially eye-opening, “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”
When I teach my kids about the importance of education, hard work and good grades, this morning I am reminded and convicted to impress on them the importance of their relationship with Jesus and their faith in an omnipotent and omniscient Father God. Their salvation isn’t dependent on making the President’s List, their eternity rests on their belief in the Son of God. I, myself, need to depend less on intellect and wisdom and more on deepening and strengthening my faith in He who is infinitely beyond my understanding and power.
Dear Heavenly Father, Forgive me when I rely on myself . I want to look to You for everything, not just when I’m in over my head or I don’t understand things, but in all things. May I never trade my power for Your power because You are the Creator and Savior and I am not. In Jesus name, Amen
