PASTORS' DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Solid FoundationsTim Savage
48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” Luke 6
Recession, depression, war, turmoil, disease and natural disasters – every day there are new reports foretelling the end times and while there are all kinds of plans and schemes we can follow to prepare for the last days no one really knows when that is – is it tomorrow, next week, next year or a hundred years from now? This passage in Luke will help us today, tomorrow and forever. We need to dig deep and lay a strong foundation in the Lord so that when the tough times come we’ll survive; not just physically, but more importantly, spiritually. I’m reminded of the children’s song we used to sing in Sunday school, “the wise man builds his house upon a rock…” Some of us are facing tough times now, others will face them in the future, we will all struggle at some time or another; we need to prepare by reading His word, listening to His voice and serving others – that lays down a strong foundation that can withstand anything the enemy will throw at us. Too many believers are just Christian spectators building their house on the sand; it’s facade may look good and it may have an enviable ocean view, but because of it’s flimsy foundation is built on sand, it is doomed to be smashed to pieces when the storm crashes in.
How do we lay that foundation? Of course devotions and journaling nourish us daily in a rich and fruitful way. Hearing his voice every day is the best way to grow. Devotions will lead to serving and involvement, and involvement will help lead others to Christ by our efforts and example. I want to be that wise man whose house is built on the rocks. And while I may not have the biggest and most expensive home on the beach, hopefully, I will have built something that will survive the storms of life.
Dear Heavenly Father, I want to be completely grounded in You. I want to be able to withstand anything the enemy brings against me. I want to live my life as a sacrifice and an example for Him so that my family, friends and neighbors will draw close in these last days. In Jesus name, Amen
