Supernatural SightingsJustin Smith
"And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and when they came out they blessed the people, and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the pieces of fat on the altar, and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces." (Leviticus 9:23-24)
Aaron and his descendants were chosen by God to take the position of priest, assisting the people in proper worship of God. They were cleansed, consecrated, and commissioned to perform sacrifices in the Lord's presence. During this ordination process, they obeyed all God required of them, and the glory of the Lord appeared through a consuming fire, accepting Aaron's sacrifice, for all to see. The people shouted and fell to their faces, in awe and worship, as each one recognized that they had just experienced a Supernatural Sighting. A Divine miracle happened, right before their eyes, and they were able to see a glimpse of the surpassing glory of their God. It's nearly impossible to fathom what they were thinking in this moment. Emotions of surprise, fear, excitement, joy, and everything in between must have been completely overwhelming. There could be no rationalizing, no explaining away, because they had undeniably encountered the power of the Almighty God, and they were compelled to shout and fall in amazement.
I believe, as Scripture says, that the power of our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, so why don't I see supernatural sightings like this on a regular basis? Why don't I see the glory of God falling upon the Earth, upon the United States, upon Hawaii, in this way? As I ponder this question, I am reminded of Jesus declaring that He has prepared greater works for those who believe. So, again, where are these great works and overwhelming displays of power? In John 13 Jesus bestows a new commandment upon His disciples to love one another as He has loved them. He then accompanies this commandment with a declaration that the world will know they are His by their...love; not their miracles, not their signs and wonders, and not their power of evil. Yes, the disciple's ministry would have evidence of these, but Jesus declares that onlookers would acknowledge their relationship with the Almighty God, not through signs and wonders but, through love and faith. What an amazing perspective shift! When God's people, the Church, you and me, are walking in love and faith we take part in Supernatural Sightings. God desires to transform this world and extend His Kingdom through men and women devoted to loving the Father and loving those whom He places before us. The power of God, the glimpses of His glory, and the divine miracles of love and faith are too often disregarded as trivial when, in actuality, acts of love, service, and compassion are utilized by God to bring about supernatural change. I certainly still believe that God displays His power through the signs and wonders, but it is time that I grasp that as God empowers me to love and serve those around me I encounter the miraculous through His Divine Glory.
Lord, the desire of my heart is to live a life of faith, obedience, and fruit that brings great honor to you, so please enable me to love and serve as you would. I surrender my strengths, weaknesses, and everything in between, and I ask that you would work through me that others might come to know and understand your love.
