Leave everything. Gain everything.Micah Simpson
Luke 18:28-30 "Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”29“Truly I tell you,”Jesus said to them,“no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God30will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
It was just a few chapters ealier that Jesus tests the crowds who were following him, to see if they truly wanted to be his disciples. The conditions were these, you cannot be his disiple unless you loved Jesus more than family, unless you loved Jesus more than your possessions, and you must pick up Jesus' will for your life and lay down your own. So when Jesus runs into the rich young ruler, the conditions don't change, he asks the young man to give up his possessions and be his disciple. But the young man could not part with his wealth.
This is where Peter realizes that he DID give up everything to follow Jesus! He was so excited to remind Jesus of this, he says, "we have left our own homes and followed you." and with grace and understanding, Jesus confirms their excitement and he answers that those who leave behind everything will gain everything that Jesus has to offer! not only on earth, but in heaven. When you decide to give up everything for the sake of the gospel, you not only get taken care of by God in this life, but eternally. It is so worth it to follow Jesus, and even though it may seem impossible to give up all your wealth and your family and your own desires, God can give you that and so much more. But if you hold on to your life, then thats all you get.
Lord, I pray that I would continue to pick up your will for my life and put down my own. I realize that following you is not a walk in the park, but I also realize that you will fully take care of me and all that I need. I pray that you would give me the strength and patience it take to contnually put my trust in you, because I dont want to give up or give in when my discipleship is tested. I love you Jesus, and Im so thankful that you called me to be your disciple. Amen.
