Abiding: Do It

Micah Simpson

Scripture
Matt 7:15-17 " Beware of thefalse prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16"You willknow them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17"Soevery good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit."
Observation
The church will never be free from false teaching, and false prophets, and bad fruit. Jesus tells us that where there is good fruit, and good teaching, there will always be the opposite as well, bad fruit and bad teaching. Paul and the apostles had to deal with this as well, men who were teaching false things, using the gospel for their own means of gain. Today, its easy to see men who are in the faith for themselves, and for their own personal gain. This is why we must look at the fruit, we must see the result of their life, and their teaching, and their work.

This doesn’t mean that I run around with a sword trying to take swings at people that I think are false teachers, this means 2 things...
Application
1. Our main concern should always be how we are doing with Jesus! If you are doing good with Jesus, and you are allowing him to search your heart, and allowing him to check your motives, then bad fruit will not stand a chance. The simple fact is this, as Jesus tells us"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." John 15:5

My goal is not to worry about the fruit that I am bearing, my goal is to stay connected to the source, the sustainer, the one who holds all things together and causes all things to grow. One of the reasons that the body of Christ is so important, aka, the church, is because it allows us to be under the authority of others who are connected to Christ, and when you are abiding in Jesus, and others are abiding in Jesus who can speak into your life, good fruit will be the result!

2. Be able to contend for the faith! This means knowing the truth and being able to defend it and guard it. This means that when you hear false teaching or something that does not line up with scripture, you need to be able to confront and handle yourself in a way that is pleasing to God and with grace to others. This means that you guard the sheep that Christ has entrusted to you, and if something looks harmful or dangerous, you step up and protect the sheep.
Prayer
Lord I pray that I would always be connected to the source! Because I am nothing without Christ! Lord help me to be on guard for those who may bring false or bad teaching, and with grace and firmness I pray you would help me to lead them to the cross. Help me to watch my life and doctrine closely, I pray that I would be submitted to those around me in the church, so that I will not go on teaching or accepting bad teaching.

Lord I pray that my pursuit would be retaining sound words, and sound teaching, and that I would pursue you with all my heart, because you are the way, the truth and the life, and in you the truth is revealed.
