Who's Approval

John Tilton

Scripture
"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10)
Observation
Paul's correction to the Galatians apparently was to keep the Galatians from getting confused by people who were skewing the true Gospel that they were called by Christ to teach. His admonishment was to remind the Galatians not to be swayed in their receiving, learning and internalizing the true Gospel, as there were those at that time that were perverting the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul's further admonishment was to quell the reason of why they were possibly being swayed and that was their wanting to win the approval of others or trying to please others. Thus, by wanting to win the approval of other or please others, they were open to receiving and believing a tainted Gospel. Paul's correction and directive was for the Galatians to stay true to pleasing Christ and to seek the discernment that would enable them to know and hold fast to the true Gospel, and not be swayed.
Application
We often see much of this today in how people share different views of the Word of Jesus Christ with charismatic presentation and interpretations, often citing miraculous events and testimonies. Yet these presentations and interpretations may not be Biblically sound. Sometimes it is those close to us as friends or within our own church that share quirky interpretations of the Word. We need to remember that the Word has been around for centuries and if there is a new twist being shared that has never been heard of before, it's just that, a new twist that probably isn't sound and true. Or, if we study the Word well we can recognize the similarities in false doctrine of today that mirrors what is pointed out to be aware of from historical Biblical accounts. However, the main point here being, who am I intent on in pleasing and gaining approval on each day? Jesus Christ or man? Am I willing to graciously question, differ in opinion and conclusion from friends or others in ministry if I get a check in my spirit? Or will I go along with their opinion to gain their approval and please them? This is also a reminder to me therefore to be strong in the Word and to take the time to study further to know and understand the Word well, less I be swayed.
Prayer
Lord, please enable me to understand your Word so that I may walk in your ways and your will. Help me to know it well so that I will not be swayed. May I also always be mindful of who I live for and aim to please which is you; and therefore not be influenced or blinded by my relationships or presentations by others if they are not of sound Biblical foundations from you.
