Punishment to fit the crime

Richard Waialeale

Scripture
Ezekiel 28:17 (NIV)
17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.
Observation
God’s judgment against Tyre fit her crime. Tyre’s crime was her pride and rejoicing over the fall of Jerusalem. Both nations dominated the trading routes in those days. Jerusalem by land and Tyre by sea. But with the fall of Jerusalem, Tyre’s greedy pride saw only more business and made Jerusalem the laughing stock of the country. Ezekiel prophesied that God will punish Tyre just like the ocean waves crashing her walls and towers. The invading nations would attack like the ocean waves pounding against Tyre’s defenses, destroying Tyre’s walls and towers.
When pride and greed overtakes our focus on Jesus, we fall prey to our own sin and often times we reap what we sow.
Application
Last week I had the unfortunate experience of letting pride get the best of me. This past wee the surf on the south shore was huge! I went out on the biggest day of the week (the surr report claims it hasn’t been this size in 15 years) and I could see how dangerous it was, but still felt confident that “I could handle.” After being in the water for over an hour, I caught one of the biggest waves I’ve ever ridden. The ride was long and as I came to the inside section, I started “hot dogging it,” and fooling around, when the wave knocked me off the board - picked up my thick heavy board and slapped my head with it. It was an accident waiting to happen. Earlier, I prayed that I would be careful and stay safe, not goof off and be reckless. I could have gotten seriously hurt, but thank God I didn’t. All of that to say, that my pride got in the way of safety. At that moment I was on the wave, shining the light of myself instead of Jesus was more important then being careful on a dangerous day. LOLO! AHA!

Prayer
Father I pray for forgiveness of my pride getting in the way of shining the light of Jesus. Thank you for waking me up when I’m feeling too good for myself. I humble myself before you always, In Jesus Name I Pray. Amen.
