Worldly goods for eternal fortunes

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18
Observation
The context of John’s perspective as he examined and expressed Jesus’ life through the Gospel of John and the epistles is intriguing. Taking John’s experiences, reactions and interactions with Jesus is important as we consider applying his writings.

The way John lives out his faith is seen through this passage above. I believe John is writing out of his conviction and desire for the people of God to live out God’s love in practical ways.
Application
Merry Christmas... as we celebrate the joy of Christ entrance to this world to save me! I’m convicted again by this passage because I am so self centered and selfish. I fight these sinful, carnal attitudes daily! And yet God, through John, calls me to love practically. Worldly goods can be used of God to share Jesus love!

Worldly goods with worldly desires and worldly lives will produce worldliness. But worldly goods with Christlike love through Christ obedient lives will reveal His love!

My simple, life transforming way to live differently will be to give away worldly goods to meet the needs of the helpless and hurting. The less fortunate will gain the fortunes of His love - through me!
Prayer
Lord Jesus - Happy Birthday. Please forgive me for being caught up with the hustle and bustle of buying, giving gifts - worrying about what others will give me and how I can give in return. I’m so sorry for missing the true meaning of Christmas. You are so gracious!
