Skimming and Skimping the Word

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture
As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. Luke 8:15
Observation
In the presence of His disciples and a large crowd of followers, Jesus shares the parable of the sower. It’s also the parable of seeds and different kinds of soil or conditions of one’s heart. There is a responsibility the soils have. We all hear and will respond to the seeds of His word differently.

For Christians today, His word is ‘His Word’, the Bible, and also His spoken word in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ day, He is telling the disciples and followers to trust His spoken word - which required much faith. The Word of God for them was the Torah, which was accepted and the authority of God. The varied conditions of peoples hearts exist today, as it did centuries ago.
Application
Today, I choose to live differently by submitting my heart to Jesus. I desire to listen to His Spirit with “ears to hear” rather than a dull, calloused heart. Today, this means that I must not rush through my devotions. Sometimes, in fact too often, I’m rushing and skimming in my time in the Word of God.
An honest and good heart means that I confess my weakness, even the sin of worldliness, that captures the attention of my heart at times. I’ve cared more about situations, things, provisions, myself - than I do spending good, restful, relaxed and quality time with my God.

Prayer
Once again Daddie God - HELP! Please forgive me again, for my lack of devotion. More so, it’s my heart condition - where no one but You can see - where I struggle with the lusts and passions of my flesh. Thank You for Your love, patience, grace upon my life. I love You - Need You! May my life bear much fruit, as I grow in patient, committed endurance to know You more! Help me not to skim and skimp on my time with You.
