Fat & Sassy

John Tilton

Scripture
"For the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance. In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The LORD alone led him; no foreign god was with him. He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fields. He nourished him with honey from the rock, and with oil from the flinty crag, with curds and milk from herd and flock and with fattened lambs and goats, with choice rams of Bashan and the finest kernels of wheat. You drank the foaming blood of the grape. Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their Savior. They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols. They sacrificed to false gods, which are not Godó gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your ancestors did not fear. You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth." (Deuteronomy 32:9-18)
Observation
The scriptures describe how God cared for, protected, nourished and blessed Jeshurun with all that could be hoped for. Yet, they grew fat and confident forgetting the one and only God, and turned to false gods. They forgot who gave birth to them and was their Rock.
Application
Isn't it human nature to have the tendency to seek, follow and obey God when we are in need? He has been faithful to provide, nurture, grow us, meet our needs and bless us with our hearts desires of success and realizing our dreams. Only then that we forget our first love when we are successful, provided for and often filled with overconfidence of how we achieved success and who we should be? We even often go further to make our achievements and possessions are idols and gods, putting them before our God almighty. We can become consumed with success and rewards seeking more and more. The scary part is that we are often blinded to what transpires in our life thinking that we are all good with God, following Him and in line with His will.

Be careful of the enemy! He is crafty! Be careful of the fall!
Prayer
Dear Lord, I thank you for blessing me with provision, grace, talents and abilities, opportunities, guidance and success. Please let me not believe my success and press, to be a glutton of achievement and possessions forgetting my first love which is you. Please guide me to keep me in align with your Word, your will and your love. May I not become fat and sassy being caught up in self.
