Faith and Deeds

Richard Waialeale

Scripture
James 2:17 (NIV)
17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

James 2:24-26 (NIV)
24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Observation
Faith and deeds are as essential to each other as it is with the body and the spirit. How is a believer to stand confidently on God’s Word even in the midst of trials and temptations?
What does it mean when it is said, faith by itself, or faith in and of itself with no evidence of action, is dead?
What the Word of God says in James is, “whenever you face trials... the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” Meaning the only way to develop perseverance is through experience or action. The scripture is saying, faith is at its best when there are deeds happening right beside it. The story is told of The 1989 Armenian earthquake - flatten the nation and kill thirty thousand people. Moments after that deadly tremor ceased, a father raced to an elementary school to save his son. When he arrived, he saw that the building had been leveled. Looking at the mass of stones and rubble, he remembered a promise he had made to his child: “No matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you.” Driven by his own promise, he found the area closest to his son’s room and began to pull back the rocks. Other parents arrived and began sobbing for their children. “It’s too late,” they told the man. “You know they are dead. You can’t help.” Even a police officer encouraged him to give up.

But the father refused. For eight hours, then sixteen, then thirty-two, thirty-six hours he dug. His hands were raw and his energy gone, but he refused to quit. Finally, after thirty-eight wrenching hours, he pulled back a boulder and heard his son’s voice. He called his boy’s name, “Arman! Arman!” And a voice answered him, “Dad, it’s me!” Then the boy added these priceless words, “I told the other kids not to worry. I told them if you were alive, you’d save me, and when you saved me, they’d be saved, too. Because you promised, ‘No matter what, I’ll always be there for you.’”

Application
God says, start going and I’ll guide you, He wants me to live by faith, and it’s my move now. That’s the action step. I may not know the when, where, how and why, but with the faith of a mustard seed, a real believer expects a miracle without knowing the when, where, how and why. Jesus says, “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you.” That’s good enough for me.

Prayer
Jesus said, “If you believe.” The man said, “Lord, I do believe, but help me with my doubts (my unbelief).” Jesus said that’s good enough and He healed the man’s son. Lord my prayer is I do believe and whatever doubts I sometimes have, Lord help me with my unbelief because I want to believe and I must walk in faith. In Jesus Name I Pray. Amen.
